Emulated corresponds to what your refer to as 'legacy'.Synthetic corresponds to what you call a 'regular network adapter'.. To operate a synthetic NIC, the guest OS needs extra drivers. These are called Integration Services. AFAIK, Hyper-V ships with drivers for WindowsXP.
